Episode 27: Technology Bytes. . .Apple Event Preview

This is Technology Bytes, episode 27 for September 10th, 2023.

Technology Bytes is a microcast where I share brief bytes on interesting technology.

My name is Joel.

Enjoy, and here we go.

As you listen to this microcast, we are only days away from Apple’s next media event, where I feel like they’re really going to talk about two products mainly.

One is the new iPhone 15, and the other is the Apple Watch, I think we’re at Series 9, and possibly the Ultra 2.

I’ll get into that a little more as I go through this microcast.

In today’s world, it’s become more and more difficult for Apple to keep anything under wraps, as it were, so harder and harder to surprise.

When you think about the new iPhone coming out, it’s mostly been released.

There may be a few things that Apple could maybe pull out of their hat, but it’s the name, so there’s something in a marketing sense.

The largest iPhone has been the Max.

You had the Pro Max, I think, 12, 13, 14, and so there’s some debate on whether they’re going to call the 15 a Pro Max or maybe just the iPhone 15 Ultra.

Those are things because that’s marketing language that they don’t have to share with anybody.

But as far as what the phone is going to be, it has mostly leaked.

You have the titanium instead of the stainless steel, could make the phone a little bit lighter.

You have the USB-C instead of lightning, who knows why, maybe because of the European Union rulings, or maybe Apple was going to do it anyway, who knows.

You have the camera upgrades where they’re talking about going with a periscope lens for the telephoto part of that so you can get more optical telephoto lens in your iPhone.

So a lot of those things are known.

The Dynamic Island stays, the Face ID stays, the MagSafe stays, all those things that are going to be fairly consistent.

They’re talking about maybe a little bit of a change to the edge where it may not be so sharp.

You may have a little more curve of the edge.

And all those things are out there in the wild, in the mix, but I still look forward to the event.

I still look forward to listening, to hearing.

Some of it may be the hype, some of it may be the, I don’t know, the marketing.

I just am an Apple geek, so I like those kind of things and I really enjoy and am looking forward to the announcement.

And I’ve already got permission from my wife to buy the 15 Pro Max or the Ultra, whatever it is, even though there’s also rumor that it’s going to be more expensive this year.

That is the phone that I get.

I’ve already told my son he can have my 14 Pro Max, so that is already in the works.

And I’m really looking forward to the new phone hardware this year.

The other thing that they’re going to talk quite a bit about, I think, is the Apple Watch.

Maybe not quite as much as they do about the phone because the phone is ultimately important, I think.

But, you know, you’ve got the next one coming out, the Apple Watch 9.

It feels like there are less rumors about the watch than the phone, but it seems like they always put new sensors in the watches.

So I’m interested in that, although I haven’t heard very much about that.

They always talk about the brains, and it seems like this year we’re finally going to get a new brain in the Apple Watch.

We’ve pretty much been using the same processor since the 5, if I understand it right.

Right now I’ve got the 7, so I skipped the 8.

But they’re also talking about the Ultra 2, so the second Apple Watch Ultra coming out.

And that is the one that I’m really interested in listening and hearing what they’re doing with, because I think I’ve got permission from my wife also to get that watch.

So it’s going to be an expensive fall for me, but I’m really looking forward to both the phone and the watch, and really looking to see what the Ultra has to offer.

Right now I use a two-watch system because I cannot get the battery to last through all of my workouts and a full day.

So I wear one watch through the night to do my sleep tracking, and then in the morning through all my workouts and walking and all of those things, which takes an hour to almost two hours to accomplish.

And then before I go to work, I switch watches, and when I come home, I switch again.

And that’s just the life that I’ve lived.

I think with the Apple Watch Ultra, I may be able to get by with just having one Apple Watch.

I’ve already promised one of my Apple Watch 7s to my son as well, so that he’s going to get some fun upgrades without having to spend any money this fall as well.

And I always enjoy sharing that with my kids.

So that is what is happening.

The biggest news in tech, and next week I’ll be talking about it again, except from a point of having heard everything that’s come out, being able to digest it a little bit, and having no longer to deal with the rumors, but knowing reality.

So that is all I have for Technology Bytes today.

Thank you for listening to the Technology Bytes microcast.

I look forward to the next time we are together, taking another bite of technology.
