This is Technology Bytes, episode 34 for October 29th, 2023.
Technology Bytes is a microcast where I share brief bytes on interesting technology.
My name is Joel.
Enjoy, and here we go.
I feel like the last couple of episodes or so I’ve indicated at the beginning that this might be a short microcast.
Well, by definition they’re supposed to be short anyway, but this week’s might be even shorter than most.
As you may or may not know, Apple has decided to hold a video event, so no in-person happenings, but they’re holding it on Monday evening, the 30th of October, and they are calling it ScaryFast.
I saw the email come through in my email inbox, and they have the morphing Apple logo that turns into the Finder logo, and so of course, as with all pundits, many people are speaking about what they think Apple is going to announce.
So along with sharing what some of the podcast people that I listen to are thinking, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on it as well.
Most think, because the logo ends up being a Finder logo, that the event is going to be an event about the Mac, and that it’s going to be something about how fast the Mac is compared to other things.
Ever since Apple Silicon came out, Apple has been at the top of the pile as far as speed goes, especially when you look at power per watt or speed per watt, because their chips are so efficient.
The fact that the Apple logo turns into the Finder logo seems like a pretty reasonable thought to think this is going to be a Mac event, and then the question is, what are they going to announce?
So the oldest computer, or the one that was updated the farthest back, and I don’t remember how many days, somebody said it on a podcast, I didn’t really pay that much attention, but it’s been a while, I actually own one of these, and it’s the M1 iMac, and the one that came out with all the colors, and was quite popular, it’s only a 24-inch screen, and so many are waiting for a faster iMac, a bigger iMac, something that they used to do with the Pro in the Intel days, and that sounds like a reasonable thought, because that computer is getting a little bit old.
The chip inside it is quite fast, I have an M1 iMac that I bought not too long ago, and then I recently, or most recently, purchased the M2 MacBook Air, and I use them simultaneously in the universal control mode, and in reality, in my daily use, I really don’t see that much difference between them, and so while they are both significantly fast enough to do the jobs that I want, and quite fast compared to other computers that I’ve used, I’m not sure that scary fast means taking the iMac from an M1 to a simple M2 processor.
Obviously, at least I think it’s obvious, when they put the word scary in front of fast, it may be because it’s really going to be fast, or maybe it’s just because it’s the day before Halloween, and that’s what we think of as scary stuff in the Halloween time frame.
So, I don’t know, many people think it’s going to be maybe the M3 chip, and something real different is potentially all levels of it, from the M3, the standard, that might go in the 24-inch iMac, to the M3 Pro, to the M3 Max, that could, at the moment, have been going into studio, Mac Studios, and Mac Minis, and MacBook Pros, that’s a lot of computers to announce just with a video.
So, I’m not entirely sure, but I think M3 seems to be a reasonable thought, in that flow of information, or the next thing that should be coming from Apple.
So, I have a little bit of a problem, and that is, whenever Apple introduces something, I’m always interested, because I’m an Apple nerd, I love Apple products, and I follow them, but at the moment, in the Mac arena, I am not in the market for any new computers.
One, they’re a little bit expensive.
Two, I recently purchased new MacBook Air, as I mentioned earlier, and the iMac that I purchased, I didn’t purchase that much before I purchased the M2 MacBook Air, but I obviously have a computer that fully fits what I need it to do, is not slow, does not need to be upgraded, I actually bought the lower-end version, so at the moment, I’m not in the market.
Does that mean I won’t listen?
Nope, absolutely not, I will be listening, and I will be very interested to see what Scary Fast means to Apple.
If you have any thoughts about this event, I’d love to hear about them, but for today, that is all I have.
If you would like to drop comments, or suggestions, or questions, you can send those to technologybytes at merigfamily.com That’s M-E-R-I-G-F-A-M-I-L-Y and Bytes is B-Y-T-E-S and I’d be more than happy to respond.
Thank you for listening to the Technology Bytes Microcast.
I look forward to the next time we are together taking another bite of technology.
