This is Technology Bytes, episode 117 for June 1st, 2025.
Technology Bytes is a microcast where I share brief bites on interesting technology.
Enjoy, and here we go. So this week I thought I would talk about the tech company shows that have happened or will be happening in the not-so-distant future.
So mostly I’m thinking of three companies, Google, Microsoft, and Apple.
And so Google has an event called the I.O.
I think it’s called Google I.O.
I don’t pay any attention to it.
I hear about it some on the podcast that I listen to.
And then Microsoft has a developers conference, which again, I don’t really pay attention to except for the information that is shared on tech podcasts that I listen to.
Most of the tech podcasts I do are centered on Apple, although I do listen to one that’s just the tech news of the week that could be from anywhere, not necessarily from a specific company.
But the majority of what I listen to is, on the tech side anyway, is about Apple.
So Apple’s WWDC is coming June 9th.
And so I’ll talk about that a little bit later in the episode.
So going back to Google I.O.
and to Microsoft Developers Conference, I’m really going to combine them together in what I want to talk about today.
And so just thinking about the things that they announced, you know, they talk a bit about their software, a little bit about their hardware, and just what is coming in the future, the same thing Apple’s going to do in just a little over a week from now.
And so in those conversations that they had with the tech world, they talk, unsurprisingly, a lot about artificial intelligence and the things that they are working on and the things that they’ve implemented and what it’s going to look like in the future.
And when you pay attention to what they’ve said, and again, remember that I don’t really pay attention, it’s just really things that come at me from the outside, the focus seems to have been, and to no one’s surprise, artificial intelligence.
That is what the tech world is talking about right now.
And so whether you like what they announced, whether you didn’t like what they announced, whether you trust these two companies with your information and knowing all about you, is really neither here nor there.
The fact is that they demonstrated artificial intelligence applications that are far beyond, it feels like to me, what Apple is doing at the moment.
And it’s probably more than feels like.
I think they are far beyond what Apple is doing.
And there’s some reasons for that maybe, but the reality is that that is the stress that is made in these conferences.
That’s what stressed, I should say, in these conferences is their application and the future of artificial intelligence in both their software and how that works with their given hardware.
And that is what they focused on.
And so it makes you a little bit nervous when you are an Apple fan and know that a week from this coming Monday, Apple is going to have the tech conference that they have every year at this time called the Worldwide Developers Conference.
Because I do pay attention to Apple tech news, then knowing what’s coming up at WWDC, well, maybe not knowing, but reading what people think and just listening to the pundants, there are many that are saying that Apple is not going to be talking about artificial intelligence.
They’re going to be talking a lot about their operating systems and the software that they make that goes with their operating systems.
From things that might be of little importance because the next version of Apple’s software would be like iOS 19 and watchOS.
I don’t know what they’re at, but whatever those numbers are, I think watchOS 12 and iPadOS would be 19, macOS is like 16 or something like that.
And so the news says that they’re going to do it all by the year.
So they’re going to say that it’s going to be called iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 and so on and so forth.
So it kind of makes sense that they would take some time to make the numbers the same because they release them all basically at the same time and they’re all new at the same time.
And having them be the number of the year that’s going to take the focus, then that kind of makes sense.
All through 2026, Apple will be working on making their operating systems work at whatever they want them to work at.
And so the numbering system actually does make sense and maybe becomes far less confusing, even though I think all of them will also have names maybe, but maybe even the names go away.
I’m not sure what they’re going to do, but that’s not a huge announcement, is it?
It’s just a number of an operating system.
So the other thing that they are talking about is a redesign of the operating system itself.
And so they’re talking about changing the icons, changing something in the screens, changing this or that or color, whatever it is.
Again, I understand that it might make the systems more attractive.
It might make them feel a little more user-friendly, I guess.
It’ll be interesting to see how they couch that and present it to their developers in that conference.
But again, it doesn’t feel like that big of a deal.
I used to look forward to what’s the next operating system’s going to provide?
What are the things that they’re going to do?
Some of the things that they’ve announced in the past, I’ve just enjoy using mostly Apple software on Apple devices.
And so it’s always interesting to see what they’re offering next.
And they’ve made great improvements in many, many of their applications in their operating systems.
But the world is going to expect artificial intelligence, which Apple calls Apple intelligence.
And yet the pundants are saying Apple’s not interested in talking about that.
Well, that’s where the tech world lives today.
I don’t live there yet.
So maybe I don’t care that they talk about it.
But it makes it feel like anything else they announce is very simple and secondary and will not drive traffic to Apple devices.
They always make improvements to their software that help with photography, which is a big part of what they work on.
They like sound.
They like music.
They like things like that.
I’m sure there will be improvements.
But people are going to expect something to be new about Apple intelligence, myself included, even though I don’t tend to use any artificial intelligence stuff in my day-to-day life, which many find surprising considering that I’m a self-proclaimed, I guess, tech nerd.
So I don’t have much more than that.
I really don’t know what they’re going to announce.
Some of the things that I’ve read about are kind of interesting.
But I think if they totally ignore Apple intelligence and what they are working on in that area, Apple may be in for a bit of an uphill battle as they move into the next few years.
But that being said, I don’t think I’m giving up my Apple stuff anytime soon, even without artificial intelligence.
The way the systems work together, which they could also improve and make my life even easier, the way they talk to each other, the environment that you get to use.
I mean, I sit at my desk every day with three screens in front of me on three different computers where they each can operate independently, but I’m running them all as if it was one big system.
And it is so nice and so useful.
And trying to do that with any other operating system on any other hardware is almost impossible.
And no one does it like Apple.
So I’m looking forward to what they do in that arena, but I still believe they have to talk about Apple intelligence.
Well, that’s all I have for today.
