Episode 118: Technology Bytes…WWDC Initial

This is Technology Bytes, episode 118 for June 8th, 2025.

Technology Bytes is a microcast where I share brief bytes on interesting technology.

Enjoy, and here we go.

So this week I’m going back to the WWDC conference that’s going to be happening in just a couple days on Monday the 9th of June.

I know last week I talked about WWDC as well and a little bit about what I thought they had to do, however you want to look at that, but I also tied in what other companies had done who have recently had a conference.

But this week I just want to talk a little bit more as WWDC is rolling in on us what I am expecting and what I might be looking forward to.

So my son Ryan is also an Apple nerd like me, maybe not quite as much as I am, but he still follows them.

He still uses Apple hardware, although he is more willing to use other manufacturers' hardware than I am.

I stay in the Apple ecosystem and that’s where I live, and that’s okay.

So I was asking him about what he’s expecting from this WWDC opening keynote coming up on Monday.

And we both kind of stared at each other going, we don’t know.

We don’t know what to expect.

We don’t know what they’re going to do.

It was kind of weird because in general we have ideas.

I think every year into the past, whether we listen to pundants and what their expectations were that maybe got us excited, and we really did not have an answer.

And we talked back and forth about a couple things that might happen.

So we were really asking, are we excited about this keynote?

We generally talk about it every year.

We look forward to it every year.

And in fact, he had kind of forgotten that it was coming up on Monday.

And so that’s very weird for us because that is not generally how we feel about Apple events.

So then I just thought for myself later, what do I want from this conference?

What is my expectation?

And again, it’s a hard question for me to answer.

I think of things in the past where maybe there had been some leaks about some exciting things.

And last week I talked about some of what I think Apple needs to do with the Apple intelligence world and how that might go.

And I’m still struggling to come up with something.

So then I asked myself a different question.

Why am I an Apple product fan?

Well, one of the big reasons, maybe the major reason, there’s a few that I really like Apple products, is because of the way that they work together.

It’s the entire environment.

The way that all of their devices talk to each other.

The way that there’s a syncing.

Like, I don’t think anyone else really accomplishes.

Things that are being done on a device transferring to a second device and working at the same level on the same thing in the same, pretty close to the same environment.

I have two Macs that I use at work.

A MacBook Air and an iMac on my desk.

And they really live side by side.

But to me, they look like the same thing.

They’re set up the same.

They have the same files.

I log into them as the same user.

And they interact with each other as if they have a cord tying them together.

And then I also have my iPad that’s right there that does the same exact thing.

And then my phone is tied into that environment as well.

And then my watch is tied into that environment as well.

Some may say that that’s the trap of Apple, where they get you into their environment and you never want to leave.

Well, that’s only because it works so well.

If the things that they did did not work well, then that tie-in would totally disappear.

So why do I like Apple product?

Well, it’s very solid.

It’s very well built.

It’s super tech forward.

And it all works together.

So when you think of it that way, what do I want from WWDC?

Well, as I think in anticipation of the event, I think what I want is an even tighter tie between all of the Apple products that I use on a daily basis.

I want them to be even more seamless.

I don’t want there to be any hiccups.

I want the software to be solid.

I want it to react as if you were using the same exact program in the same exact environment, regardless of which device I’m on.

Obviously, the phone has a smaller screen, so there’s limitations there.

And the watch an even smaller screen, so there’s limitations there.

But I want to see that integration become even stronger.

And I want there to be some surprise in that.

I want them to have thought of something.

You know, I think of a couple years ago when they did universal control, I had no idea.

I don’t know if I heard anyone ever talk about it, but that is one of the things that makes my work life so much easier.

So there are just things that I think Apple could do with that integration.

Some things that people use are clipboard managers, let’s say.

It’d be really cool if Apple would just build that into their operating system.

They already have universal cut and paste, but that’s one thing at a time, and then it disappears, right?

Which is why people use clipboard managers.

I don’t use one because I don’t know if it would be completely useful, but if Apple just put one in the environment, I would use it because it’s there.

I think that how the systems work, just how you get to your work, how the files work together, where they are, how they’re stored, how they’re synced, all of that could be better.

And I look forward to what Apple does in that environment as well.

And then just making the whole experience prettier.

Maybe it just looks better.

Maybe the things that you get to touch on the different screens or that you interact with with the trackpad or whatever mouse device you might use, it just looks better and it kind of draws you in and it keeps you engaged.

Not that I need to do that.

It’s not like I need to be out of the reality of whatever I’m doing, but just the tightness of which things work together I think can be better.

And then last week I talked about Apple Intelligence.

I hope they surprise us with something there.

I hope that they have a good story even if there’s nothing super to announce necessarily.

Just a good story of their direction and where they’re going without making promises that they can’t live up to.

So this is a way different Apple than I’ve ever been involved with to this point since I became such an Apple fanboy.

For the first time it’s hard to know where they’re going to go.

It’s hard to see how they’re going to recover from what some see as artificial intelligence failure.

I think that we are in for a surprise.

It’ll be interesting.

I’m still really looking forward to Monday evening when I get home from work to see what they do.

But I’m also a little concerned that I’m going to be disappointed.

Well, either way, next week you’ll hear the results and I will let you know the things I like, the things I don’t, the things that surprise me, and hopefully there is something that just keeps me loving the Apple way.

Well, that’s all I have for today.

Until next…

Oh, sorry.

As always, I want to thank you for listening to the Technology Bytes microcast, and I look forward to the next time we are together taking another bite of technology.
